The 8 Steps to Effective Networkingn14.jpg

Networking is the process of making connections one person at a time. Informational Interviewing is the key that unlocks networking process and can dramatically increase your chances of "being in the right place at the right time" and penetrating the hidden job market and ultimately harvest a job offer. Specifically, a job-hunting network built through informational interviewing will help you:

  • Gain "inside" perspective about companies and your industry.
  • Improve your presentation and rapport building skills.
  • Spread the word that you're in the job market.
  • Garner personal introductions to other professionals.

The Hidden Job Market

Networking through informational interviewing lets you tap into the critical "hidden job market" that is invisible to most passive jobseekers. Here's how two PIT members used their networking skills, particularly informational interviews, to unearth hidden job opportunities:

  • Will, an unemployed copywriter, met with Marie, a senior account executive at an advertising company. She gladly referred him to professionals in other firms. But Marie also remembered Will when the time came for her company to add several account executives to the payroll, and she offered him one of the newly -created positions.
  • While Barbara was at an informational interview with a buyer at a local retail store, she learned about a management position that was about to be posted - for only two days - on a competing company's bulletin board. That was exactly the kind of job that Barbara was seeking, so she applied for the position within the narrow window of opportunity, and she was hired.

The stories of Will and Barbara aren't unique. First I'll guide you through the informational interviewing process, which is at the heart of the process. Then I'll show you to how to maintain your job hunting network so that it will be a permanent part of your career success. Even when your job feels secure, it can only help you to have a network of industry allies who would move heaven and earth to help you maintain your career success.
