Now it's time to boil what you've learned into a personal mission statement. Write a few sentences that describe who you are and where you're going, and the result will be your mission statement. An abbreviated mission statement can also be converted to your career objective on your resume. Personal mission statements that have helped PIT members focus their job searches and sell themselves to employers.

Your mission statement sets forth your current goals. These may change during the course of your job search and beyond. For that reason, you'll want to reevaluate your mission statement once a year. Each time you update your mission statement, you should project five years into the future, even though you may well change it in the interim to keep pace with your personal and career growth.

Your five-year mission statement will provide you with a long-range plan and remind you of your shorter-term goals. It will serve as your roadmap and your beacon, so don't be shy about framing yours and hanging it in a prominent place where you can see it every day.
